When it comes to choosing the perfect wool duvet, it’s important to choose the weight that fits your lifestyle. You may see terms like “lightweight”, “medium weight”, or “GSM” (grams per square meter) on bedding labels, but with wool, a GSM number doesn’t tell the whole story.
What Is GSM?

GSM stands for grams per square meter, a common way to measure the density of materials like wool, down, or synthetic fibres. But here’s the key: GSM isn’t an apples-to-apples comparison across different materials. Unlike other materials, wool has natural temperature-regulating properties that synthetics and even down can't match. (If you want to know more about the wonderful properties of wool, you can check out this post!)
So while a down duvet and a wool duvet might both say “300 GSM,” the way they feel and perform can be completely different. This is why you’ll see that our duvets are categorized as light weight and medium weight, instead of as GSM.
Lightweight vs. Medium Weight Wool Duvets
Light Weight | Ideal for warm climates or sleepers who run hot. Thanks to wool’s breathability, many people find that a lightweight duvet is comfortable year-round - even in cooler months. Lightweight duvets work great paired with cozy layers if you’re looking for an all season duvet. |
Medium Weight | Better for cooler rooms or sleepers who like more warmth, it’s more well known as our 3-seasons duvet. If your bedroom tends to be chilly at night or you enjoy a cooler indoor climate, even in summer, a medium weight duvet could be used all year too. |
But It’s Not A Blanket Approach
Keep in mind: not all wool is created equal. The comfort and performance of a wool duvet depend not just on the weight, but also on the quality of the wool, its loft, how it’s processed, and how it interacts with your body’s temperature. That’s why our wool may regulate temperature differently than another brand. We hand-select the wool used in our duvets, pair it with high-quality cotton, and quilt each one ourselves to ensure it meets our standards for comfort and craftsmanship. The breeds of sheep we raise on your farm are a down wool breed, super lofty and durable, perfect to hold its shape and breathability in our duvets.
Checklist: Which Wool Duvet Is Right for You?
Ask yourself these questions to decide between light or medium weight:
-
Do you sweat or overheat easily when you sleep?
-
Is your home well-insulated and warm at night?
-
Do you live in a warmer climate or keep your windows open year-round?
-
Do you prefer a cool, crisp sleep environment—even in summer?
-
Do you layer with blankets or prefer just the duvet?
-
Is your home cooler at night, especially in the winter months?
-
Do you sleep with a partner who prefers more warmth?
If you answered "yes" to the first four, a lightweight duvet might be your best match.
If you leaned “yes” toward the latter questions, consider a medium weight, or have both on hand to rotate with the seasons.

When it comes to choosing the right wool duvet, comfort and function matter more than technical specs. Trust how it feels in your space and on your body. A thoughtfully crafted wool duvet can offer year-round comfort and natural temperature regulation that numbers alone can’t explain.
That’s the beauty of wool.
